Stakeholders want adoption of climate smart agric practice

Stakeholders at the just concluded dialogue workshop on low carbon growth for Nigeria has called for the adoption of climate smart agricultural practices to ensure GHG efficiency and massive reforestation.
Speaking during a lecture titled: “The Imperative for Policy Coherence between Nigeria’s NDC and ERGP in the Agricultural Sector to Foster Sustainable Food and Nutrition Security and Low Carbon Development,” during a plenary session, Prof. Emmanuel Oladipo, from the Department of Geography, University of Lagos said such agricultural practice would protect Nigeria agriculture against the effect of climate change.

He also spoke on how the agriculture sector could be channeled toward fostering sustainable food and nutrition security and low carbon development.
He said the workshop with the themed, “Policy Coherence in the Interest of Nigeria’s Citizens,” organized by Heinrich Boll Foundation, Nigeria Economic Summit Group (NESG) and the office of Senator Shehu Sani was timely.
According to him: “If delivered upon, the Nationally Determined Commitment (NDC) will improve standards of living, promote clean energy access and food and water security for all, whilst reducing emissions 20-45% below business as usual by 2030 and making the country more resilient to climate impacts.

Saying this will increase the nation’s carbon sink potential to absorb much of the emissions from agriculture which could increase by as much as 40% by 2030, under business as usual scenario, as well as ending the use of charcoal and limit wood fuel use.
“How to rapidly develop the economy without amplifying the current fossil fuel intensive development path in view of the country’s commitment to the Paris Agreement goal of putting the world on track to avoid dangerous climate change by limiting global warming to well below 2°C
