Sports Minister makes u-turn on Super Eagles coach, joins NFF in pursuit of foreign handler

Nigeria’s Sports Minister, John Enoh, has now joined the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) in preaching employment of a foreign manager for Super Eagles few days after Finidi George quit.

Recall that the NFF announced a few weeks ago that it will appoint a foreign technical adviser for the Super Eagles following the team’s woeful performance in the recent 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic.

On his part, Enoh said the new coach must have a personality that can command the respect of the players and ensure the team qualify for the 2026 World Cup finals.

According to him “It has to be a name that will inspire the spirit of our nation,” Enoh told Eagle7 FM.

“He has to be a first-class coach with a track record, a pedigree, who will earn the respect of our players.”

On chances of qualifying for 2026 World Cup, Enoh believes it is still possible for the team to make it to the mundial.

“The majority opinion is that it’s not impossible yet (to qualify for the World Cup).

“In sports, nothing is impossible.

“We have only played four out of 10 qualifying matches, we still have six matches remaining.

“I believe that with the right mix of a coach, who is convinced it is possible, the right mentality of the players, they have to have the fire and the hunger, it is still possible.”

The Super Eagles will face Rwanda when the 2026 World Cup qualifiers resume in March 2025.

They will also face the Warriors of Zimbabwe in the same month.
