Speakership tussle: It’s my turn, Wase declares

The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ahmed Idris Wase, has formally declared his intention to run for the speaker of the 10th assembly, saying “it’s my turn.”

Wase at the declaration event Abuja on Friday also urged the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to ensure compliance with the principle of equity, fairness, and justice in addressing the zoning of positions in the National Assembly.

According to him, it’s a constitutional requirement drawn to ensure the unity and stability of the country.

He urged his colleagues to vote for him on the day of inauguration, promising to be a speaker “who will create an enabling environment for your voices to be heard.”

Those present in solidarity with Wase were other aspirants, including the chairman of the Committee on Appropriations, Aliyu Mukhtar Betara; Yusuf Gagdi; Sada Soli; Mariam Onuoha, and Sani Jaji.

Betara, in his goodwill message, assured his colleagues that all differences among the aspirants would be addressed, adding that the six of them, including Wase, “will meet and present one of us to you as the next speaker of the 10th House of Representatives.”

Also speaking, Senator Timothy Adudu on behalf of lawmakers from Plateau state commended Wase for the approach so far, adding: “It is inconceivable that in zoning, the North-central had nothing; in this exercise, the North-central was deliberately ignored. At all times, the executive will always want to destroy the legislature. We must come together to fight this, if not, we will not be independent.”
