BAYO AGBOOLA from Ibadan writes that the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) is making great inroads in the South West amid challenges, and is likely to spring surprises in subsequent elections, both in the zone and the country at large.
Incursions in South West
The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), no doubt, stands as one of the political parties to watch in the present and forthcoming political dispensation in the country going by its spread across Nigeria, particularly, its incursion into the South West part of the country in the past few years.
In the South West, without mincing words, NNPP, like wild fire, has caught up with the states of Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ekiti and Ondo and has become a force to reckon with given its spread in the recent time and the waves of its leadership in the zone.
Propellers of party growth
Of particular mention here is the party’s 2023 governorship candidate in Ogun state, Ambassador Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, among others.
Ambassador Oguntoyinbo, in numerous interactions with newsmen attested to the claim that NNPP as a strong political party in Nigeria at present moment has come to stay as a formidable platform for politicians aiming to turn the fortune of the country around for good.
In one of such encounters, Oguntoyinbo said, “The NNPP (New Nigeria People’s Party) is a relatively new political party in Nigeria, established in 2013. Its current position in Nigerian politics is characterised by a growing but still niche presence.
“As of now, the party has been actively participating in elections across various states, aiming to establish itself as a viable alternative to the more established parties. However, it faces challenges common to smaller parties, such as limited funding, infrastructure, and nationwide recognition”.
He stressed, “The party’s ideology emphasises social justice, economic empowerment, and good governance, appealing primarily to segments of the population dissatisfied with the status quo”.
Concerning Ambassador Ajadi’s contributions to NNPP in general, it is glaring that he has been instrumental in bolstering the party’s presence in Ogun state as well as in other states in Southwest region.
Going by his leadership roles in focusing on grassroots mobilisation, party restructuring, and aligning party objectives with regional interests, Ajadi has left no one in doubt that he is a leader with panache whose unquenchable appetite for party building is unrivalled.
His diplomatic background has also contributed to enhancing the party’s credibility and visibility within political circles. Under his stewardship, NNPP in Ogun state has seen increased membership, strategic alliances with local influencers, and heightened advocacy for regional issues.
His impact extends beyond Ogun state, influencing NNPP’s strategy and appeal across the Southwest by promoting inclusive policies and pragmatic governance solutions.
Prospects, challenges
Going by the feelers in the nation’s political terrain, NNPP stands as one of the political parties possible as the most expected game changer to watch as far as the 2027 general election will be concerned.
Despite that NNPP faces both opportunities and challenges, the party’s growth trajectory, grassroots mobilisation efforts, and strategic leadership under figures like Ambassador Oguntoyinbo positions it as a potential contender in select constituencies.
Pathway to growth
The NNPP chieftain does not believe the party’s growth will come in a platter. Ajadi said, “success will hinge on its ability to expand beyond regional strongholds, attract more funding, and articulate a compelling national agenda.
“NNPP’s commitment to transparency, inclusivity, and responsive governance will be pivotal in gaining voter trust amidst a competitive political landscape dominated by larger parties.
“In the context of Nigeria’s current socio-political and economic challenges, NNPP advocates for reforms aimed at addressing corruption, improving security, and revitalizing the economy. Till date, NNPP has been vocal on issues such as youth empowerment, education reform, healthcare accessibility, and infrastructural development.
“Amidst prevailing issues such as insecurity, economic instability, and governance deficits, NNPP presents itself as a progressive alternative committed to grassroots engagement and responsive leadership. Its policies prioritize sustainable development, social justice, and accountable governance, aiming to address the multifaceted challenges facing Nigeria today.
With the political activities picking up in the country, especially, the coming governorship elections in Ondo and Edo states, all eyes are on the NNPP as one of the major political parties to showcase strength at the polls and possibly spring political surprise in the outcome of the election.
