Sokoto state government has signed the second phase of the water project and the rehabilitation of three major water works with MSS China ZHONGHAO Nigeria limited at the cost of N7.6 billion.
Performing the ceremony, Governor Aliyu Magatakardan Wamakko said the two contracts comprised the construction of 40 million gallons of water per day which would gulp N5.7 billion and the rehabilitation of Bi-water package plant, Old water works and Sokoto new water extension treatment plant at the cost of N1.9 billion.
He said the decision to award the contracts was borne out of his administration’s quest to provide adequate and good drinking water to the electorate.
According to him, the award of the contract followed the successful completion of 20 million Asare water project awarded by his administration in 2012 and commissioned by the former President Olusegun Obasanjo in August, last year.
Wamakko also said his administration had provided some water schemes which included the construction of wells at Kaurare and Bodai villages at the cost of N120.4 million.
Earlier, in his address, the Commissioner for Water Resources, Alhaji Shehu Dalhatu Tangaza, said when the two projects “are completed, the perennial water problems being experienced in Sokoto will become history.”
