The Senator who represented Kaduna central senatorial district at the 8th Assembly, Shehu Sani, has extended his support to victims of the recent floods that ravaged Mokwa Local Government Area (LGA) in Niger state, describing the incident as a national tragedy that demands urgent intervention.
The former lawmaker made the remarks during a visit to the affected communities, where he personally distributed food items and essential supplies to displaced families.
Sani who is also human rights activist emphasised the importance of empathy and solidarity with the victims, particularly orphans, widows, and widowers left vulnerable by the disaster.
In a statement he personally signed and made available to newsmen, Senator Sani said “The Mokwa tragedy is a dark cloud of responsibility hanging over the sky of our country. It is not just a local disaster it is a national tragedy that calls for a collective response from government and citizens alike”.
He lamented the loss of lives and destruction of property, calling on both federal and state authorities to prioritise disaster preparedness and infrastructure development to prevent future occurrences.
Senator Sani also appealed to the federal hovernment to set aside a special intervention budget specifically aimed at the reconstruction and modernisation of Mokwa, stating that such an initiative would serve as a fitting tribute to the memory of those who perished.
“The rebuilding of Mokwa must go beyond relief. It should be about restoring hope and dignity. The town deserves to rise from the rubble as a symbol of national unity and resilience,” he said.
Community leaders and flood survivors who spoke during the donation exercise expressed gratitude for the senator’s gesture, describing it as timely and deeply appreciated.
