The Senate Wednesday passed the sum of N124.2 billion as the 2024 budget for the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF), following the consideration of the report by its Committee on Police Affairs.

The passage came during plenary after vice-chairman of the committee, Senator Yunus Akintunde (APC Oyo Central), presented the report and outlined key components of the proposed expenditure.

Senator Akintunde in his presentation said the committee reviewed and upheld the proposed figure of N124.2 billion, with a breakdown showing N1.2 billion allocated for personnel costs and N98.6 billion earmarked for capital expenditure.

He added that the budget would support ongoing efforts to train police personnel, rehabilitate and construct police stations, and upgrade essential facilities across the country.

Other major areas covered include the renovation of barracks and clinics, as well as the procurement of compressed natural gas (CNG) and related interventions to enhance police mobility and sustainability.

In his remarks, Senate President Godswill Akpabio expressed optimism that the approved expenditures would strengthen national security.

He urged the Police Affairs Committee to conduct robust oversight to ensure transparency and accountability in the fund’s implementation.

“The expenditures that we might hear from the Police Trust Fund should enhance security all over the nation.

“The committee should also ensure that they do proper oversight so that every kobo that is herein appropriated will be used for the benefit of the police and the nation in general”, he said.

The Nigeria Police Trust Fund was established to provide alternative funding for the training, welfare, and operational needs of the Nigeria Police Force, with the aim of improving law enforcement effectiveness nationwide.
