Nigerian domestic airlines have taken to alternate airports within the eastern part of the country following the closure of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu runway by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) at the weekend.
The country’s airport management agency announced the temporary closure of the aerodrome on Saturday for what it called a sudden and significant rupture in the asphalt surface at a critical section of the runway.
FAAN disclosed that the emergency repairs will be conducted on the distressed portion of the runway from April 22nd to May 6th, 2025.
It affirmed the repairs are in compliance with the Nigerian civil aviation regulations, adding that as part of FAAN’s commitment to passenger safety and the modernisation of airport facilities, the runway will not be open for landings or takeoffs during the rehabilitation period.
Meanwhile, domestic airlines operating into the Enugu airport have also announced their temporary suspension of flight operations to the coal city, intimating passengers that alternate airports will be used where they can then travel by road into Enugu state or their destinations.
The duo of United Nigeria Airlines, which has its operational base in the former Eastern region capital and Air Peace have disclosed alternate airports for the duration the repair works on the runway will last.
While UNA said it will operate in and out of the Chinua Achebe Airport in Anambra, Air Peace has chosen to ferry its passengers in and out of Asaba airport.
United Nigeria Airlines explained that the operational adjustment is a proactive measure aimed at minimising disruptions to passengers’ travel plans, while ensuring continued adherence to safety, comfort, and seamless service delivery.
“In line with FAAN’s directive and the need for urgent runway maintenance at the Enugu Airport, all United Nigeria Airlines flights will temporarily operate from Chinua Achebe Airport, Anambra.” the airline said in an electronic statement.
On its part, Air Peace said “Please be informed that all flights scheduled into and out of Enugu will now be operated into and out of Asaba. We regret any inconvenience this change may have caused.”
FAAN had also appealed to all airport users and stakeholders for their understanding and cooperation whilst the repairs on the runway last.
