Rotary club flags off N10m projects in Abuja school

Rotary International Club, District 9125, on Tuesday launched a N10 million project at the Government Girl Secondary School in Duste Alhaji, Abuja.

The projects, which included the construction of 10 toilets, eight bathrooms, and planting of trees, according to the club were designed to promote personal hygiene and literacy of the over 2000 students of the school.

The District Governor of the club, Dr. Goddy Nnadi, who spoke with journalists at the sideline of a sensitization and awareness talk held in the school by the club, said the projects would be sited in the school for the female students to have their dignity protected.

He said: “Every year we do projects, and in this district, have selected projects for this year. And it’s a mega project. They are going to do 10 toilets, and eight bathrooms for the school. As women, they have their dignity and sanitation is an issue for them and of course, having a good environment for that is very key. 

“Some clubs came together to adopt this because actually, I told them that we need to have very major projects, not just small projects that will not have any impact on people that they have to get noticed. And I’m so pleased today that we are flagging off three major projects today.

 “They’re going to build 10 toilets, and we will build bathrooms. They will rebuild the Soak away that have collapsed, and we will plant trees for the environment, which is part of the areas of focus of watering”.

Also speaking, the District Chair on Empowering Girl Initiative, Ms. Lovina E. Okom-Ntui, said the projects were sited in the school to improve the life of girl-child, and as well promote their literacy level.

She said: “… Rotary as an international organization, deemed it necessary to add the empowering girls initiative as one of his core initiatives to improve the life and livelihood of the girl child across the world, and promote their hygiene, promote their literacy level. Because when you do that, you’re building healthier families.

The Principal of the school, Hajia Fatima Mohammed, in her address, thanked the club for the projects, saying that the toilets’ facility would complement the existing ones in school, hence bring convenience to the students.
