Osun: Robber who stole police phone pleads for mercy

A suspected armed robber, Godwin Emmanuel, 23, who stole police mobile phone inside patrol van in Osun state, has pleaded for mercy.

Emmanuel, who was paraded at the police headquarters in Osogbo, Friday, said, “I was arrested for armed robbery in Ile-Ife. When I was being transported to the Police Command in Osogbo, inside the police patrol van, I stole a mobile phone. I don’t know that it is a police phone. I told the police not to be angry with me. I don’t know when I did that.

“I took the phone into the police cell after I removed the SIM card and put it inside the cover. I wanted to use the phone to call my people because I was not allowed to call them since I have been here about two months ago. I beg, forgive me.”

The suspect who was arrested with Olajide Kareem, 28, and Mike Emmanuel, 33, for robbing passengers of their belongings along Ilesa-Osu way, Osun, was said to have come from Ikorodu to perpetrate the crime.

The Police Spokesperson in Osun, Yemisi Opalola, who paraded the suspects, explained that the arrest of Kareem took the police to Ikorodu where the two other suspects were arrested.

“In one of the incidents, a bus driver was shot on his leg but was subsequently rushed to Seventh-day Adventist hospital in Ile-Ife where he received treatment. “Consequently, the DPO at Moore Division Ile-Ife led his patrol team together with members of the local vigilante group and arrested one Olajide Kareem ‘m’ in the bush.

“Having received the report, the suspect confessed that he was member of a five-man gang of the armed robbers who came from Ikorodu area in Lagos state to perpetrate their acts in Osun state.

“Subsequently, intelligence driven investigation and strategic tactical operations led the operatives of the Anti-kidnapping Squad on investigation activities to Majidun area Ikorodu, Lagos state where the duo of Mike Emmanuel and Godwin Emmanuel were arrested,” Opalola said.
