A human rights organisation, Global Peace Movement International, has backed the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, on the issue of special promotion for police officers, stating that allegation by Senator Isah Misau against the Nigeria Police Force was baseless and vindictive.
Misau in interviews in the media had alleged that police officers pay huge sums of money for special promotions, as well as that the IGP, was taking bribe to post police officers and had diverted N10 billion paid monthly by private companies for police duties.
The police have since denied the allegations and invited the law maker to provide proof of his claims.
Addressing journalists, yesterday in Abuja, President-General of the organisation, Dr Mike Uyi, who said the press briefing was not held to support the IGP, stated that it was to defend the police as an institution.
“The global peace movement international is not here to defend the I-G but to defend the police. This news conference is held to put things in proper perspective for Nigerians. We will not allow any body to rubbish the Nigeria Police Force,” he said.
He said the UK based human rights organisation involved in human rights advocacy, crisis and conflicts resolution, had carried out its investigation in respect of the allegations against the police.
According to him, “when allegations are made, the onus is on the person making the allegations to prove what he or she alleging.”
Uyi said that Misau had been unable to substantiate any of the allegations against the police, noting that until he substantiates the allegations, he remained ‘a deserter and brandishing suspected forged retirement letter.’
