The remains of 50-year- old Ijeoma Wilson Obot, who was killed by ‘insane’ police officer, Inspector Effiong Bassey on March 23, 2025 has been abandoned in mortuary by authorities, the family said Tuesday.
Recall that while the lady died at the scene of the shooting incident at the Atakpa Police station, Calabar, several others sustained various degrees of injuries.
The Police Public Relation Officer (PPRO), Irene Ugbo, had said the killer officer was mentally deranged.
The deceased’s children alleged that despite early visits and promises from government and police officials, no financial or legal assistance has been provided to the family and that their mother’s dead body was still in the mortuary due to a lack of funds for burial.
The son of the deceased, Promise Wilson Obot said, “We were visited by the Deputy Governor, the Chief of Staff, and the Commissioner of Police. They all made promises, but since then, we’ve been left on our own.”
Corroborating, her daughter, Miracle Obot, said the family received N50 ,000 from the then Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Zone 6, and N80,000 from a local lawmaker to help deposit the body in the morgue. She said no further support has followed.
Sources at the police headquarters in Calabar told Blueprint that the killer officer had been dismissed from service and charged to court.
However, the family of the deceased are strongly disputing the police’s narratives that Inspector Bassey is mentally unstable.
They alleged that the shooting stemmed from a dispute between the officer and his DPO over a N20 million operation-related payment.
