The students of Technical College Kajuru have lamented overcrowded classrooms and hostels, with a plea for governor Uba Sani to interven..
The students who were relocated from Kajuru to technical college Malali due to insecurity explained that the overcrowding and poor facilities are affecting their learning outcomes.
A student of the college from the boys hostel who wouldn’t want his name on print narrated their ugly situation.
He said: “We are over 500 students sleeping in one hostel. Most of us sleep on the floor because there is no space. Rain beat us here in the hostel. The roofs are leaking, the windows are damaged. The environment is not conducive for us.
“We defecate at the open field around the school. No toilets for us in the male hostel. We also take our bath outside.
“Because of damaged windows here, mosquitoes are biting us thereby making some of us have malaria regularly”.
The girls’ hostel is not excluded from these menace. The students luggages were also seen outside the hostel.
One of the girl students said their major problem in the girls hostel is lack of toilets and bathrooms.
She said “We have only one toilet for over 150 girls. Some of our hostel girls are complaining of itching in their private parts”.
“We have about 10 girls who have traveled home to treat infections. Our toilets is completely bad. The waste from the toilet is coming out. And is littering our environment and smelly”.
“Now that the weather is extremely hot it has not been easy for us sleeping in overcrowded hostel”.
Another student who identified herself as Elizabeth said, “We sleep on the floor while some of us sleep outside. The situation is worst during raining season and harmattan due to the cold weather”.
She also complained of overcrowded classroom and lack of workshops where they are meant to learn practicals.
Similarly, the President of Old Boys Association of the school, Ndaks Timothy, stressed the need for government’s intervention.
“The students were relocated from Kajuru to Malali due to the insecurity in Kajuru, when they brought them we thought that it was something of few months not knowing that they will stay four years here. They have been facing so many challenges in terms of accomodations
“The boys are kept in one facility without bathroom and the girls are facing the same thing. Their boxes are kept outside, they sleep on the floor. Some of them especially the girls are suffering from infection, ” he said.
He therefore, called on the government and non-governmental organisations to assist the students.
Aminu Illiyasu Kajuru who is also an old student of the school, called on the government to provide medical equipments and personnel for the students.
Kajuru however, stressed the need to build toilet facilities for both boys and girls in order to end open defecation.
