The Kaduna state Police command has dismissed earlier reports of multiple deaths in Monday’s tanker explosion at Dan Magaji, Zaria, but confirmed instead that several people were injured.
The incident happened around 8.30 a.m. near the Rochas Foundation School along the Kaduna–Kano expressway bypass between Kwangila and Dan Magaji and it involved two fuel-laden tankers and a Volkswagen Golf car.
Police Public Relations Officer PPRO) DSP Mansir Hassan, who spoke with our reporter, said no lives were lost in the crash.
“As at this moment, no death has been recorded. All the affected victims are in hospital,” he stated.
Another source told Blueprint that four people sustained injuries and they are receiving treatment at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching, Zaria.
He alleged that the Golf car was parked on the road when a tanker, travelling against traffic, rammed into it.
Earlier, security analyst, Zagazola Makama, had reported on X (formerly Twitter) that several people died in the crash, claiming the collision triggered at least five explosions, sending flames and thick black smoke into the air. He also said all occupants of the cars, except one driver, were killed instantly.
Emergency services and security operatives however cordoned off the scene, diverting motorists to alternative routes as rescue and recovery operations continued.
