About 300 people have been displaced and at least 30 houses destroyed, following a series of attacks by gunmen in Qua’an-Pan local government area of Plateau state, the director of press and publicity to the chairman of the LGA, Danaan Cletus Sylvanus, has said.
He stated in Jos Wednesday that the attacks, which occurred in late August as residents were preparing for harvest, affected 10 communities in Doemak District, including Nteng, Doop, Zhep Morop, Gyeergu, Kelaghan, Loon, Kwakii and Gorom.
He added that barns and farmlands were also destroyed.
Chairman of Qua’an-Pan of the local government, Hon. Christopher Manship, condemned the attacks and convened a stakeholders’ meeting in Doemak to address the situation.
“We are working tirelessly to restore peace and normalcy to the communities,” Manship assured.
He said security agencies had been deployed to the affected areas and assured residents that efforts were ongoing to restore peace.
Plateau state Commissioner of Culture, Tourism and Hospitality, Cornelius Doeyok, commended the chairman for initiating the meeting, while the acting president of the Qua’an-Pan Traditional Council, Safiyanu Allahnanan, said traditional rulers must play a key role in restoring peace.
Manship also visited affected communities where he urged security personnel to remain vigilant.
He assured displaced residents that his administration was working to ensure their safe return and the restoration of normalcy.
