Osun State Government has inaugurated a committee to enforce relevant provisions of cyberbully law in a bid to tackle on-line fake news, among others.

This is as the opposition All Progressives Congress, (APC), described the move as an attempt to suppress voices of opposition and give way to dictatorship by Governor Ademola Adeleke.

Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, in a statement, yesterday, said an action committee to give effect to cyber crime and bullying has been set up and domiciled in the Ministry of Justice.

The statement read in part; “Increasing wave of fake news negatively affects both the government and the opposition and that it is high time all operators are brought within the compass of the law in the exercise of their rights as guaranteed by the constitution.

“The committee domiciled at the Ministry of Justice has as members journalists and legal practitioners, informing the public that the mandate is to ensure that fake news are nipped in the bud, no matter who the perpetrators are.

“The committee is to apply relevant sections of the Cybercrime Act of 2015 as operational clauses to ensure all stakeholders operate within the law in the exercise and enjoyment of their fundamental human rights.”
