Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Sunday, attended the 8th day fidau prayers for the late Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona.
Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Ogbagba II joined his ancestors last week, aged 91.
The President who landed at about 12:45pm at the Ogun state Agro cargo airport, Ikenne proceeded to the Awujale private residence, in Igbeba area to pay his final respect at the grave site.
Speaking at the fidaous held at the Dipo Dina International Stadium, Ijebu Ode, the President described the late Awujale as more than a monarch, but a father and believer in democracy.
President Tinubu added that the late monarch was instrumental to his emergence as President, which according to him, he will forever be grateful.
“Our history would not not have been completed, if I failed at the last election. This is basically because of your support and prayers of the late Awujale. But today, he is no more.
“Baba was steadfast, resolute, and encouraging to the course of June 12 and democracy.
“The Awujale was a leader of conscience, and tradition. We have named many institutions in his name, and his legacy will endure forever”, he added.
In his remarks, Ogun state governor, Dapo Abiodun, called on the people of Ijebuland to remain united and uphold the values of peace and harmony championed by the late Awujale.
He urged residents to be law-abiding and to honour the monarch’s legacy through actions that reflect integrity, dignity, and selfless leadership.
In his short sermon, the Chief Imam of Gbagura, Prof. Kamaldeen Bello noted that death, being inevitable teaches every human the essence of life
“We will all taste death, so live as though today is your last”, he stressed
Dignitaries present at the prayers include, the governors of Kwara, Ondo, Ekiti states, and the deputy governors of Oyo and Lagos states, as well as ministers, amongst others.
