Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Engr. Babachir David Lawal, has formally resigned his membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking the end of a long-standing association with the ruling party.
In a letter dated June 29 and addressed to the APC Chairman of Bangshika Ward in Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Lawal announced his resignation, stating that he would disclose his next political move in due course.
“I write to formally notify you of my resignation from the All Progressives Congress. In due course, I will make public my current political affiliations where I plan to join other compatriots to work towards making Nigeria a better living place for all its citizens. This resignation takes immediate effect,” the letter read in part.
Lawal, a former National Vice Chairman (Northeast) of the APC, was once a close ally of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu but distanced himself from the party leadership over what he described as religious insensitivity, following the Muslim-Muslim ticket of Tinubu and his running mate, Kashim Shettima, ahead of the 2023 presidential election. He subsequently backed Labour Party’s Peter Obi.
In a further move signalling his alignment with the opposition, Lawal appeared on July 2 at a major event where the African Democratic Congress (ADC) structure was formally handed over to an anti-Tinubu coalition, led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. Lawal was introduced as one of the coalition’s key promoters.
Earlier in March, Lawal and Atiku had jointly announced plans to form a political alliance aimed at challenging the Tinubu-led administration in future elections.
With his official exit from the APC, Lawal is expected to play a significant role in shaping the emerging opposition front ahead of the next electoral cycle.
