Offa monarch, Ijehu community at loggerheads over disputed farm land

 

There is uneasy calm in Ijehu community, a suburb of Offa town in Offa local government area of kwara state following a bloody clash over a disputed land during which many people were injured.
The incident over the disputed farmland, which has many economic trees, including cashew plantation, occurred during the last Easter holiday.
It was gathered that the pandemonium stemmed from the violent clash between the land owners and some alleged agents of Olofa, Oba Mufutau Gbadamosi Esuwoye II.
Many people reportedly sustained varying degrees of injury during the mêlée.
The spokesman of Kwara state Police Command, ASP Ajayi Okasanmi, who confirmed the development, said about five people had been arrested over the clash.
Addressing newsmen in Ilorin the state capital yesterday during a peaceful protest to the state Assembly, the Baale of Ijehu community, Moshood Adeogun, alleged that the monarch used thugs to drive them away from their land.
Adeogun, who said that about seven hectares of cashew plantation planted over 40 years ago among other cash crops, were a destroyed by the alleged agents of Olofa, added that their people, who sustained varying degrees of injury were in hospital.
In his reaction, the Olofa of Offa, Oba Mufutau Gbadamosi, said that the piece of land belong to his Esuwoye family, saying that grandparents of the Ijehu people only took care of the land on behalf of his family, adding that they had been informed several times on the need to retrieve the land from them.
He also said that the people, together with about 15 armed thugs, attacked his men when they went to clear the farmland at the weekend, adding that his people sustained varying degrees of injury.
He also said that he was prepared for amicable resolution of the matter should the people embrace peace and atone for their sins.
