The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has strongly condemned the brutal killing of innocent travelers in Mangun, Mangu local government area of Plateau state.
CAN described the attack as “barbaric, senseless, and inhuman.”
In a statement signed by its secretary, Elder Sunday Oibe, the Northern CAN expressed outrage over the incident, which occurred Friday, June 6, 2025.
The victims, said to be indigenes of Zaria in Kaduna state, were travelling to Qu’anpan LGA in Plateau state to attend a wedding when they reportedly lost their way and stopped in Mangun around 8:00 p.m. to ask for directions. They were subsequently attacked and killed.
“We unequivocally condemn this heinous and senseless act of violence. This barbaric and inhuman action reflects the worst of human nature and must not be tolerated under any circumstances,” the statement read.
While acknowledging the security challenges facing communities in Mangu LGA, the Christian body insisted that no circumstances could justify such “beastly and ungodly” behaviour.
The group lamented the deteriorating state of security in Nigeria and warned that the impunity with which criminals now operate poses a grave threat to national unity and stability.
“Nigeria is sliding dangerously towards an abyss, and the silence and inaction of leadership at various levels only embolden those who seek to plunge this country into chaos and bloodshed,” Oibe warned.
Northern CAN called on both federal and state governments, as well as security agencies, to act decisively in apprehending and prosecuting the perpetrators of the killings.
“The continuous erosion of accountability in our justice system has emboldened lawlessness, and this must be urgently addressed to stop people from resorting to self-help,” the association stated.
The statement extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for healing for those injured in the incident.
