The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) has paid tribute to former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, following his death, describing him as a devoted patron of Nigerian sports and a pillar of support for athletes during his lifetime.

In a statement issued by its Public Relations Officer, Tony Nezianya, the NOC extended heartfelt condolences to the Federal Government, the Nigerian public, and Buhari’s family. The committee acknowledged his exceptional commitment to sports development, noting that his leadership marked a significant era in Nigeria’s athletic history.

Buhari served as the NOC’s Grand Patron across three separate tenures—first as military Head of State from 1983 to 1985, and later during his two civilian presidential terms from 2015 to 2023.

The committee recalled his pivotal role in one of Nigeria’s early international football successes—the country’s victory at the maiden FIFA Kodak U-16 World Cup in China in 1985. As Head of State at the time, Buhari promised houses to the players and coaching crew, a pledge that was eventually fulfilled during his civilian administration, decades later.

NOC President, Engr. Habu Ahmed Gumel, described Buhari as a man of integrity and unwavering commitment to athletes’ welfare.

“President Buhari kept faith with destiny and never toyed with the desires of sportsmen and women,” Gumel said. “He ensured they received their due during his lifetime. That is a rare and admirable quality in leadership.”

Gumel emphasized that Buhari’s support and recognition of excellence continue to inspire current and future generations of Nigerian athletes.

The NOC concluded its tribute with prayers for Buhari, asking Allah to forgive his shortcomings and grant him eternal rest in Jannatul Firdausi.
