NOC announces Olympic Marathon Walk in Abuja

The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) has announced that it will sponsor this year’s Olympic Marathon Walk, a major highlight of the annual Nigeria Engineering Games.

According to a statement released on Thursday, July 10, 2025, by NOC’s Public Relations Officer, Tony Nezianya, the event is scheduled to take place on Saturday, July 12, 2025, in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

President of the NOC, Engr. Habu Ahmed Gumel, disclosed that the event will serve both as a fitness initiative and a social gathering for Nigerians of all ages. “I would like to see not less than 250 people at this year’s event,” he said. “I expect people of all ages to come, have fun, and use the walk to keep fit.”

Gumel also revealed that for the first time, the Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Mallam Shehu Dikko, and the NSC Director-General, Bukola Olopade, will join him in leading the walk.

He emphasized that the event will promote a healthy lifestyle while reinforcing the spirit of unity and physical fitness among Nigerians.

Participants are expected to gather at the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) headquarters by 8 a.m. for the official flag-off.

Engr. Gumel, a former president of the NSE, encouraged all members of the public to participate actively in the event.
