NMA calls on lawyers to improve knowledge of medical laws

Chairman, Kogi state chapter of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA)Dr.
Kabiru Zubair has called on legal practitioners to upgrade their knowledge of medical laws to facilitate prosecution and speedy dispensation of medical cases.
Zubair made the call on Tuesday while on a courtesy visit to the state Chief Judge, Justice Nasir Ajanah at the High Court complex in Lokoja .
He pointed out that there were ethical challenges in the prosecution of medical and health related cases in the courts by lawyers, stressing that there was need for the legal practitioners to be grounded in medical laws to enable them to properly prosecute such cases for overall improvement in delivery of healthcare in the country.
According to him, many medical related cases were pending before Industrial Arbitration Court as well as regular courts across the country that required professional handling and prosecution.
The Chairman said the new executive council of the association decided to pay a courtesy visit on the Chief Judge to further familiarize with the Judiciary and consolidate on the existing relationship between the body and NMA.
In his response, Justice Ajanah said the medical profession was one of the most important professions to which everyone must pay attention in view of its position in the physical and mental health of the people.
Ajanah pledged that any case involving the NMA pending before the courts would be treated expeditiously saying that any possible delays would only come to ensure that justice is done.
While commending the NMA over the smooth conduct of the recent election members into executive positions saying that the conduct was worth emulating the Chief Judge disclosed that the High Court complex was in need of a clinic in view of the long distance between the headquarters and the town and implored the NMA to help in the staffing of the clinic.
In a related development, the Chief Judge of Kogi, Justice Nasir Ajanah on Tuesday inaugurated an 11-member committee to monitor Administration of Criminal Justice to enhance quick dispensation of justice and check illegal detention in the state.
