The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has called on the Nigerian Senate to establish Sharia Courts in all South-Western states, including Edo, as part of the ongoing constitutional amendment process.

The group argued that Muslims in the region are being denied access to Islamic justice systems available in northern Nigeria.

MURIC also advocated for Friday to be declared a work-free day nationwide to allow Muslims observe Jumu’ah prayers without hindrance.

It insisted that the current Saturday-Sunday weekend structure disproportionately favors Christians and does not reflect Nigeria’s religious diversity.

In addition, MURIC proposed the official recognition of Islamic (Nikkah) marriages and the inclusion of the Islamic New Year as a public holiday.

The Senate, represented by top officials, assured the group that its proposals would be duly considered.
