Nasarawa speakership: Allow democracy to prevail, group tells Sule

Nasarawa State House of Assembly

The All Progressives Congress (APC) concerned group in Nasarawa state has advised Governor Abdullahi Sule to allow democracy to prevail during the election of the incoming speaker of the state House of Assembly.

Chairman of the group, Awalu Galadima, said at a press briefing, Sunday in Shabu, Lafia local government area of the state, that the exercise should be free, fair and credible without the interference of the executive.

“The concerned APC youth group is also aware that Abdullahi Sule is blindly supporting the imposition of the immediate past speaker, Ibrahim Balarabe Abdullahi, for the third term.

“Following happenings and ongoing agitations from different quarters on the election of the next speaker and principal officers of the 7th Nasarawa state House of Assembly and the tension thereof, we the concerned APC youth wish to state our positions on the matter:

“That the members should be allowed to choose among themselves speaker and deputy speaker as enshrined in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended.

“We urged Governor Sule and the party leadership to allow democratic principles and ideals to prevail and any attempt to jeopardise the constitutional process and right of members of Nasarawa state House of Assembly would be resisted.

“The group charges members of the 7th House of Assembly in the state to vote their conscience and not by religious, tribal or any political sentiment for the overall interest of the state. It stated that election of any member should be based on competence and not incumbency.

“We advise the honorable members not to sell their votes or compromise on their standard by voting on fake promises.”
