The National Agency for the Great Green Wall (NAGGW) under the Federal Ministry of Environment Thursday embarked on environmental awareness campaign for secondary school students and communities in Yobe state.
Speaking to students at Nurussalam Comprehensive College, Damaturu, the deputy director of Resource Mobilization and Partnership-Building Department, NAGGW, Abuja, Habiba Musa Tumsa, said the awareness campaign on environmental protection in the state will help students to understand and address the impacts of climate crisis, empowering them with knowledge, skills, value and attitudes needed to act as agents of change in their communities.
She stated that the National Agency for the Great Green Wall (NAGGW) is at the forefront of combating desertification in line with United Nations Convention on Combating Desertification.
“There is need to revive our lands to make them fertile and we need the children and community members to know about it now before it gets worse.
“We need to take care of the plants, we need to plant more trees and have fertile land for us to cultivate food that we eat, so all of us have to put our hands together and achieve that,” said Musa.
On his part, the Yobe field officer, Great Green Wall office, Muhammad Zaharaddin Ibrahim, noted that the environmental awareness campaign is part of the celebration of NAGGW Day, which is celebrated on the 2nd Thursday of July every year.
