National Agency for Food and Drug and Administration Control, (NAFDAC), has carried out destruction exercise of substandard, expired and unwholesome regulated product worth N5.4million.

The Director General of NAFDAC, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, who was represented by the Director of Investigation and Enforcement, Francis Ononiwu, made this known to journalists during the destruction exercise at Kuje area council in Abuja recently.

She said some of the drugs being destroyed today are drugs seized from criminal drug hawkers and the drugs are made up of psychoactive, food product such as spaghetti, vegetable oil, cosmetics, fake insecticides and medical devices.”

Drug counterfeiting is an act of economic sabotage and it also represents a serious threat to public health.

The agency has adapted a proactive approach by engaging political, traditional, faith leaders, journalist and citizens to sensitise their wards on the dangers of dealing on substandard and falsified medicines.

“We will ensure continuous surveillance and heightened raids on these products and also continue to enforce the regulations governing these products in Nigeria,” she stated.
