Morocco won the 2024 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) on Saturday, defeating debutants Madagascar 3-2 in a thrilling final at the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani.

The Atlas Lions, who previously won CHAN in 2018 and 2020, used their experience to overcome a determined Malagasy team. Star striker Oussama Lamlaoui scored twice, including a spectacular 40-yard goal, and finished as the tournament’s top scorer with six goals.

Lamlaoui opened the scoring after Youssef Mehri set him up, but Toky Rakotondraibe equalised for Madagascar. Morocco quickly regained the lead through Sabir Bougrine, assisted again by Mehri.

In the second half, Lamlaoui scored a stunning long-range goal, which became the highlight of the match. Madagascar scored late through Lalaina Rafanomezantsoa, but Morocco held on to win their third CHAN title in six years.

Morocco received $3.5 million in prize money, while Madagascar earned $1.2 million. For Madagascar, it was a historic achievement as they became the first island nation to reach a CAF senior final.

The tournament, co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, ended with Morocco once again showing they are one of Africa’s strongest teams.
