Liverpool Football Club has pledged to pay the full remaining value of Diogo Jota’s contract—reportedly worth £14.56 million—to his family, following the Portuguese star’s sudden passing.
Jota, 28, died unexpectedly just two weeks after marrying his long-time partner, Rute Cardoso. He is survived by his wife and their three children.
In a tribute to the forward, Liverpool also announced the retirement of his iconic No. 20 jersey, acknowledging his impact both on and off the pitch. Jota made 182 appearances for the Reds after signing from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020 and played a key role in the club’s 2024/25 Premier League title success under new manager Arne Slot.
Liverpool executives Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes confirmed that plans are underway to celebrate Jota’s legacy in the coming days.
Club officials and supporters have travelled to Gondomar, Portugal, to attend his wake, while tributes continue to pour in at the Anfield memorial site.
