Liverpool have reached an agreement to sign England centre-back Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace.
The 25-year-old will complete the formalities of his transfer, including a medical, in London on Monday before putting pen to paper on a long-term contract with the Premier League champions.
Talks between both clubs ended in a compromise on the fee, after Liverpool initially tabled an offer worth £35m together with a 10 percent sell-on clause.
Guehi becomes Liverpool’s second major capture on transfer deadline day, following the Reds’ £125m agreement with Newcastle for striker Alexander Isak.
On Sunday night, he captained Palace to a 3-0 victory away at Aston Villa in what was his final appearance for the London side, scoring a spectacular second goal and closing his tally at 162 games for the club.
The defender has long been a priority target for Liverpool this summer, particularly after Jarrell Quansah left Anfield to join Bayer Leverkusen.
Concerns over the team’s defensive solidity also sharpened the need for reinforcements, with Liverpool having conceded six goals across their opening three league matches. The Reds lost the Community Shield on penalties to Palace – led at Wembley by Guehi – and twice surrendered two-goal leads in Premier League matches against Bournemouth and Newcastle before rallying to win.
Including Guehi, Liverpool’s business this window has seen them also secure Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Armin Pecsi and Giovanni Leoni. That activity takes their overall spending to around £451.2m excluding add-ons – the highest single-window expenditure in Premier League history.
It marks only the second occasion in which an English club has spent more than £400m in one summer, after Chelsea’s £401.2m outlay in 2023.
