The Lagos State Ministry of Education and private school teachers have declared full support for the “Let There Be Teachers Conference,” a transformative educational initiative organized by 1 Million Teachers in Lagos.
At a press conference themed “Teachers Matter: Celebrating the Role of Teachers,” held on Tuesday in Lagos, Oluwaseyi Anifowose, director of strategic partnerships at 1 million teachers and convener of the conference, emphasized that the initiative goes beyond a typical gathering.
According to him, it offers a platform for teachers to be celebrated, empowered, and to advocate for themselves.
Anifowose shared a personal story about the profound impact a teacher named Mr. Fashola had on his life.
“There was a time I couldn’t speak good English,” he recalled.
“Today, because of a teacher’s influence, I teach the language. If I had been more focused, I would have gone beyond a PhD in English.”
He described the conference as a calling to honour educators whose influence often shapes destinies.
“This is an opportunity for the world to once again recognise the invaluable role teachers play in our society,” Anifowose said.
“On September 20, 2025, something monumental will happen at Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos, where over 60,000 teachers will gather to celebrate their profession, reaffirm their commitment, and make history.
He also revealed that the conference aims to break the Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of teachers in one place, positioning it as a landmark event not only in Nigeria but across Africa and the world.
Highlighting the critical role teachers’ play in national development, Anifowose cited the National Policy on Education (2014), stating, “No educational system may rise above the quality of its teachers.”
Mrs. Oluwatoyin Oloke, representing the Lagos Ministry of Education, alongside other key education officials like Mr. Sola Abiodun of District IV (represented by Mr. Olusegun Oshibanjo), praised the initiative.
“This is a very noble and timely programme, bringing together over 60,000 teachers in one place. From the Ministry, we are ready to give all necessary support,” they assured.
“In any area where our involvement is needed and aligns with Lagos State Government policy, we will stand by you.”
He further highlighted the global achievements of Nigerian teachers and expressed readiness to mobilize outstanding educators for the conference.
