The family of a 79-year-old man, Mr. Akojede Rasaq, has called on the Lagos State Police Command and well-meaning Nigerians to intervene after their father was allegedly brutalised by a local government chairmanship aspirant, Mr. Nurudeen Abolaji.
Ayinke Akojede said one of Rasaq’s daughters, Mr. Abolaji , a chairmanship hopeful under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for Ipaja-Ayobo Local Council Development Area (LCDA) and chairman of the Ifekowajo Community Development Association, alongside his alleged accomplice, Azeez Jinadu, popularly known as “Jegbedu” of AZ Clothing, attacked their elderly father on April 20, 2025.
Speaking to our correspondent, Ayinke claimed that the aspirant and his associate beat Mr. Rasaq “blue and black,” leaving him severely injured. She added that the assault was so vicious that her father’s vision has been permanently impaired.
The altercation reportedly stemmed from the enforcement of a long-standing environmental notice issued by the Ayobo LCDA’s Environmental Health Department in 2019.
The notice had directed residents at 28 Ifelodun Street, Ayobo — where Mr. Rasaq resides — to abate nuisances such as illegal sand dumps and indiscriminate wastewater discharge damaging public roads.
In compliance with the order, Mr. Rasaq began constructing a drainage system in front of his house, extending toward Mr. Abolaji’s property. This act allegedly triggered a violent reaction from the aspirant and his associate, leading to the attack.
Community members reportedly intervened to save Mr. Rasaq, after which the matter was reported to the Alagolo Police Station in Ipaja.
Both suspects were detained but released on bail the following day, while the victim was hospitalized due to the severity of his injuries.
Confirming the incident, Lagos Police spokesperson, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Benjamin Hundeyin, said the matter was indeed reported at Alagolo Police Station.
However, the Akojede family has expressed dissatisfaction with the police’s handling of the case, accusing the Alagolo Division of partiality.
They are now calling on the Lagos state Commissioner of Police, CP Olorundare Moshood, to personally intervene to ensure justice is served.
“This is not just about our father; it is about protecting the dignity and rights of every elderly citizen.
“We appeal to the authorities to thoroughly investigate and bring those responsible to book,” Akojede said.
