Kano-based legal luminary Aliyu Umar dies at 66

A renowned Kano-based legal practitioner, Aiyu Umar, morning died Friday morning after a protracted illness.

Blueprint reports that Umar, the longest serving attorney-general and commissioner for justice in Kano, served under Malam Ibrahim Shekarau as governor.

Known for his exceptional pedigree in criminal justice, Barrister Umar was among the lawyers that fought and defended the family of the late Gen. Sani Abacha it the heat of the legal storm that had enveloped the family after the General’s demise.

Paying tribute to the late great legal icon, a renowned Kano-based public affairs commentator, Alhaji Bashir Hayatu Gentile, said Kano “has indeed lost a rare gem in the competitive legal profession,” adding that “his compassion, pity, and sincerity of purpose would never be forgotten by those who knew much about his antecedents.”

Gentile said Umar was a rare person with a rare quality, known to be humble and down to earth in all his dealings, adding that for what he stood and achieved in life, he had left an indelible mark on the sands of time.
