Former Twitter CEO, Jack Dorsey, has launched a new messaging platform known as BitChat, designed to operate without the internet. The innovative social network aims to rival Elon Musk’s X, formerly Twitter.
Dorsey introduced BitChat in a recent post on X, describing it as a personal weekend project focused on decentralised communication. The app, currently in its early development phase, utilizes Bluetooth mesh networking, message encryption, and a store-and-forward architecture.
Explaining its functionality, Dorsey stated that BitChat enables messages to be relayed from one Bluetooth-enabled device to another until they reach the final recipient—without relying on traditional internet infrastructure.
“My weekend project is to learn about Bluetooth mesh networks, relays and store-and-forward models, message encryption models, and a few other things,” Dorsey shared.
This latest move comes years after Dorsey stepped down as Twitter CEO in November 2021. Twitter was later acquired by Elon Musk for $44 billion in October 2022 and rebranded as X.
