Gunmen suspected to be Fulani herders Tuesday launched attack on Tse Fela in Mbabuande and Tse Akyegh in Ikaaghev council ward of Gwer West local government area of Benue state, killing the Council Ward Commander of the Benue State Community Volunteers Guard and six others.

Blueprint learnt that the herders attacked the two communities simultaneously at about 3 pm on Tuesday, killing people and destroying properties as well as food bans.

It was further learnt that members of the community had noticed movement of  strange people around the area and raised the alarm for people to escape but were somewhere trapped and slain by the killers.

The District Head of Ikaaghev, Chief Adi-Bata, who confirmed  the killing of seven people in his district said  “if not for the alarm raised by members of the community, the number of casualties  would have been very high.”

He called on the security agencies stationed in the local government area to improve on their level of patrol to build hope in the remaining communities.

Ikaaghev and Mbabuande are the council wards of Gwer West local government area of Benue, which have recently witnessed series of attacks by herdsmen, a situation that has left many dead and rendered many people homeless, with properties also destroyed.

Chairman of Gwer West local government area, Francis Ayande, confirmed that seven persons were killed, including a member of the Benue Community Volunteer Guards.

He said the attack was unprovoked, noting that the incident has caused the displacement of many people.

“If you go to the area now, many people are packing out of the homes for fear of being killed.

“The herdsmen usually come with sophisticated weapons and recently they even killed a DPO posted to Naka,” he added.
