The Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO) has condemned the recent federal government’s hike in the pump price of petrol from N86. 50k to N145 per litre.
In a statement co-signed by the organisations Chairman, Agada Vincent Agada and the Secretary, Chika Oguanya, the CLO reminded President Muhammadu Buhari that revamping the petroleum sector formed the integral part of his campaign promises which includes:
“Reduction of the petroleum pump price to N45, rehabilitation of the three major refineries, jettisoning of petroleum products’ importers as well as the importation of petroleum products, and elimination of all forms of corruption and hiccups in the oil sector,”
However, the organization noted with regret that one year down the line, the Buhari led administration has not only abandoned virtually all its campaign promises, it has also failed to record any success in its economic card.
“All the economic indices in Nigeria are in a scary negative. Inflation is currently at an all time high – 12.5% while the Naira plunged from N165 nine months ago to over N300 to the Dollar today,” the statement noted.
The group therefore called on the Federal Government to immediately reverse to the old price. Failure to which, they would collaborate with other human rights and civil rights organizations in the country for mass action against the government.
