The Governor of Kaduna state, Uba Sani, has ordered full investigation into the alleged shooting of 12 residents of Sabon Gyero community by personnel of Kaduna Vigilance Service (KADVIS), who were pushing back residents from stopping a demolition exercise.

The residents of Sabon Gyero in Millennium City, Chikun local government area of Kaduna state in an attempt to stop the Kaduna State Urban Planning and Development Authority (KASUPDA) from carrying out demolitions in the community on Monday, were reportedly being restrained by KADVIS officers when they were shot at leaving 12 people, including women and children, with gunshot injuries.

The victims are: Hafsat Magaji, Rukayya Lawal, Hamza Bashir, Aminu Salisu, Rukayya Falalu and Sani Nura, Rahama Yusuf, Zainab Sani, Abdullahi Lawal, Jamilu Idris, Kamilu Muhammad and Baba Bello.

Chairman of JTF, Sabon Gyero Community, Uwaisu Yunusa, confirmed the incident and wondered why KADVIS would shot at innocent residents including boys and girls under the age of 12.

Yunusa, popularly known as Sarkin Samari, said that the incident was reported to the Police DPO, Millennium City and environs, adding that the victims were taken to Gabasawa Clinic Ungwar Rimi for medical attention.

When contacted the team leader of KASUPDA in charge of the operation at Sabon Gyero, Yunusa Ibrahim, however, denied that KADVIS shot at anyone.

He said KADVIS only fired their guns to scare people that wanted to attack them during the demolition.

However, Governor Sani, in a press statement by the Chief Press Secretary, Muhammad Lawal Shehu, expressed concern about the incident. He directed the relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation to determine the facts of the matter and ensure that justice is served.

“Governor Sani, who reiterates his commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens, said that the development negates the safety and security agenda of the Sustain Manifesto of his administration,” the statement read.
