Genk sign Super Eagles-eligible goalkeeper Tobias Lawal

Top Belgian club Genk have signed Tobias Lawal, who is eligible to play for the Super Eagles through his Nigerian father.

Lawal, 25, has now signed a four-year contract, which runs until the summer of 2029. He will wear number 26.

On the club’s website, the LASK Linz shot stopper is praised not only for his height but also for his excellent footwork.

At KRC Genk, Lawal will have to compensate for the departure of Mike Penders, who, despite Genk’s request for an additional year on loan, was refused by Chelsea.

The new signing will face competition from Hendrik Van Crombrugge and top talent Lucca Brughmans

“This is only my second club in Europe,” Lawal told the Genk website. “But Genk is a fantastic destination for young players to develop further. Especially for a goalkeeper like me.

“With Courtois, Casteels, Vandevoordt, and Penders, among others, we’ve recently developed some fantastic goalkeepers here,” he says, having done his homework.

“I’m really looking forward to working with the goalkeeping coaches here and hope to follow in their footsteps and be just as successful for this great club.”
