The Federal University Lokoja (FUL) has  matriculated  7,571 fresh students into the institution with a charge to them to shun all forms of social vices such as cultism, indecent dressing, examination malpractices, sexual misbehaviour, drug abuse, among others  that can mar  their future.

Addressing the new  students during the 13th matriculation ceremony of the university, held on Monday at Adankolo campus of the institution in Lokoja, Kogi state,  the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Olayemi  Akinwumi,  said the institution  has zero tolerance for  laziness, academic misconduct and deviant behaviors.

“Any student who fails to live up to the expectations of academic diligence and discipline will  be shown the way out. I  say this not to scare you, but to prepare your minds for the serious business ahead.

“Work hard so that you can graduate in record time. Avoid unnecessary delays in your studies. Shun bad company and do not allow anyone to mislead or derail you from your goals.

“Today is a day of celebration, and I  join your families and well wishers to  rejoice with you. I  am pleased to announce that a total of 7,571 bright and promising students have joined our University community this academic session.

“You are indeed among the privileged few selected from a large pool of applicants who aspired to study in this esteem  institution. Your admission is not a matter of chance but a reflection  of your hard work and commitment. This remarkable achievement is worth celebrating, and we are proud to welcome you into the Federal University Lokoja family.

“However, as you wear your matriculation gowns and sign the matriculation oath today, remember that this is only the beginning of your intellectual journey. The road ahead may be demanding, but with focus, dedication, and hard work, you will arrive at a most rewarding destination,”  he stated.

Professor Akinwumi while emphasizing  that the student’s mission in Federal University Lokoja is primarily to learn, grow, and develop their  full potential, he enjoined them  not to  allow  themselves to be distracted, noting that time is of the essence  and this opportunity must not be wasted.

“You have been admitted to study, and that must remain your top  priority.  Take your studies seriously. Attend your lectures, use the library and other academic resources that we have made available to you.

“The University Management has put in place the necessary facilities, a conducive learning environment, and a growing digital and physical library to support your academic success. It is now up to you to take full advantage of these resources,” he said.

He charged them to be  good ambassadors wherever they find  themselves, stressing that  as students of FUL, they were  expected to obey all the university rules and regulations.

“These are clearly stated in the students’ handbook, which you are advised to read thoroughly. Ignorance of the law is not an excuse. Any contravention of these rules will attract strict penalties, including suspension or, in some cases, expulsion from the University.

“My dear matriculating students, to be awarded a degree by this University, you must be found worthy in learning and in character. Academic excellence without good conduct is not sufficient. This is why I urge you to shun all forms of social vices that are inimical to your studies and your future”
