Fuel, Electricity hike: Osun CSOs plan mass action as 5-day ultimatum expires

PROTEST IN ANAMBRA

Civil Societies Coalition in Osun state, Tuesday told president Muhammadu Buhari to expect commencement of mass action starting from Wednesday September 9 as 5-day ultimatum issued to the president to reverse the price of electricity and fuel expires.

A statement by Comrades Waheed Saka and Fatai Tijani on behalf of Osun Civil Societies Coalition, made available to newsmen in Osogbo, Osun state capital, stated that the mass action became necessary because the federal government has been acting in ‘cruel manner.

“It is pertinent to state that the Federal Government has been acting in a cruel manner to further impoverish poor Nigerians whose pitiable standard of living and means of livelihood have been attacked by the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic, through the obnoxious increment.

“While developed nations are rolling out social intervention programmes to cushion the effect of the Coronavirus pandemic, it is unfortunate that the Nigerian government, in its unthinkable, wicked and provoking policy, decided to further unleash hardship on Nigerians by the increment in fuel and electricity tariff. We are not going to accept this.”

The group had Friday staged a warning protest, warning the president to reverse the increment or face mass action.

“Our 5-day ultimatum will ends on Wednesday, the 9th of September, 2020, after which we will commence mass action.”

Meanwhile, the RevolutionNow and National Association of Nigeria Students, NANS, kicked off the protest Tuesday in Osogbo.

The protesters gathered in front of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Olaiya junction, Osogbo, singing abusive song against the government.

They were thoroughly monitored by operatives of the Directorate of State Security, DSS, policemen and officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) who prevented them from moving around.
