FRSC, ministry partner on children’s safety

As part of activities to mark the United Nation Safety Week, the Kaduna Command of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has moved to partner with the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development on children safety on Kaduna roads.

The Sector Commander, Mr Mike Olu Olagunju, made this known during a courtesy visit to the ministry in furtherance of the UN awareness on reducing road crashes especially as it affect children by 50 per cent by the year 2020.
The sector commander said the partnership became necessary due to the rate at which children were involved in the crashes in recent times, describing it unacceptable.

The Command has recorded total of 274 crashes on Kaduna roads, this year; 118 of the crashes involved children, out of which nine died, while 49 others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
He said: “We are seeking closer collaboration with the sector on issue of children safety in Kaduna. We are seeking this opportunity to ask for your support and collaboration to collectively reduce the crash as it affects children. This is just one of numerous sensitisation programmes we have, all to reduce the rate of crashes to zero digit.”

In her remarks, the Commissioner of Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Comfort Amwe, who spoke through the permanent Secretary in the ministry, Hajiya Hauwa Humar, commended the move by FRSC, saying that the ministry was ready to partner the command in other to raise the level of awareness among women in the state.

Hajiya Hauwa charged FRSC on enforcement, stressing the need to intensify enforcement of traffic laws to deter the offenders.
She said: “We commend the work you have been doing in the state. The issue of children safety and other issues that you have raised would be looked into for prompt actions.
“The Command should help us to sanction those who violate simple traffic regulations because it is only when laws are enforcing that people complied.”
The commissioner also condemn the kidnapping of girls at Government Secondary School, Borno and bomb blasts that claimed scores of live at Nyanya, Abuja, saying that all hands must be on deck to put a stop to the insecurity in the country as soon as possible.
