Foundation builds gender capacity of female police officers on conflict, emergencies

CLEEN foundation has trained female police officers on gender awareness in conflict and emergencies

According to its Executive Director Dr Benson Olugbuo said the training which held in Maiduguri, Borno state drew experiences from prevailing practices on the field of conflict.

He said it is expected that trained personnel will be equipped with the right skillset to deliver on their mandate to enable them perform better and provide safer spaces for women and girls to participate fully in the development of their communities.

He said the call for enhanced gender awareness by the police in the Northeast also resonates globally with international instruments in place and gender based violence increasingly featuring on international development agenda.

Benson explained that since the liberation of most of the LGAs in Borno, the police has largely been deployed to stay among the populace ensuring the return of civil authority, protection of lives and properties of those returning to their communities. In 2016, over 100 police women were posted to protect victims and women in the communities in Borno state.

“Sequel to this, the Commissioner of Police, Borno command approached international development partners for support in building the capacity of its female officers to engage in gender policing owing to the gaps identified in this regard.

“It is against this background, that CLEEN is implementing this project targeted at training 60 female police officers in Maiduguri, Borno state to address the identified gaps through training exercises that suit the needs of the female police officers in Borno state.

“We hope that this intervention will inspire a greater urge for the entire Police institution to scale up this training across all other states facing similar challenges.

“Once again, I would like to extend our special appreciation to the Nigeria Police (NPF) for their consistent cooperation in all our interventions at CLEEN Foundation and to thank our host the Commissioner of Police CP Aliyu Ndatsu for his warm hospitality,” he said.
