A Forum of Stakeholders of Benin and Togo in Nigeria has debunked report going round that Nigeria students who obtained degree certificates in Benin/Togo university institutions of higher education are fake.
In a statement made available to journalists in Abuja Wednesday by Professor Amani Danjuma on behalf of the forum said all the universities both in Togo and Benin are officially approved and licensed to offer degree certificates.
Nigeria Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman in a press conference on 23rd August, 2024 said Nigeria students obtained fake degree certificates from Togo and Benin Republic universities.
The forum said the above statements and decision are coming after the Federal Government of Nigeria has in January 2024 suspended evaluation and accreditation of degree certificates from Benin and Togo, following an incident that happened in Benin Republic, saying that the committee that was set up by the Federal Ministry of Education of Nigeria was to investigate and offer recommendations after which the suspension could be lifted.
The statement added: “The government of Nigeria has until today not revealed details of their findings, and or give recommendations so that the stakeholders could know which institutions or students involved for discipline.
“Contrary to the minister’s stand that only five and three Universities are permitted to run degree programmes in Benin and Togo respectively, the Ministry of Education of Togo, when contacted, after the press conference by Nigeria’s Minister of Education, debunked the allegations in totality and call on Nigerian government to proved the allegations by the committee that was set up.
“Maybe the committee that visited Togo’s Ministry of education misinterpreted What they were told.”
