Flooding: NEMA alerts Edo, Bayelsa, Delta residents

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), has cautioned residents of Edo, Bayelsa and Delta states against  blocking of waterways and admonished them to distill drainages with a view to ensure free flow of water to prevent flooding.

The Head, NEMA Benin operations office in charge of the respective states, Dahiru Yusuf, stated this in an interview with journalists in Benin City, Edo state capital.

Yusuf noted that the advice became necessary as the nation is going towards the peak of the raining season, adding that “blocking of water channel, such as drainage channels, and natural water ways is the main cause of flash floods in States”

According to him, “drainages, culverts and all water ways should be cleared for water to flow freely without affecting buildings and also reduced the impact of flood especially in the urban centres.”

Yusuf disclosed that the agency had carried out sensitisation programme to enlighten residents on the need not to block water channel to ensure free flow of water.
