Anambra government has received the commendation of the federal government for ensuring that the pains that followed each flooding disaster in the state was mitigated, the state Ministry of Information said in its news bulletin Thursday.
A representative of the Presidential Committee on Flood, Relief and Rehabilitation (PCFRR), Mr John Owoicho, gave the commendation when he flagged off and handed over relief materials for the 2019 flood victims at the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) office complex, Awka.
The bulletin noted that Owoicho said the purpose of the hand over was to enable the government through SEMA to commence the distribution of relief items to victims.
“Partnering the state government to alleviate the sufferings of victims of flood disasters each year is essentially what the PCFRR does.
“We do not pray for flooding to happen, but it has become inevitable since 2012, that every year we receive report of flood disasters from at least 24 states across the country.
“It is then mandatory for the committee to show concern of this nature; which is why we are here to formerly hand over all these items to the state,’’ the bulletin quoted him as saying.
Owoicho said though some victims might have put the 2019 flood episode behind them, but receiving items of this nature could help to show empathy by government.
He said the items delivered through Anambra SEMA are such that the flood victims can receive some succour.
“Some items are still outstanding as majority of the food items are not yet here, but the contractors have been directed to deliver them, so the victims will receive full compliments of items earmarked for Anambra,’’ he said.
Executive Secretary, SEMA, Chief Paul Odenigbo, while expressing appreciation to PCFRR, noted that they had always remembered the state by bringing in relief materials for victims yearly.
Executive director, Anambra SEMA, Mr CY Agupugo, on behalf of government, commended the presidential committee for the tremendous gift to the state.
He reassured the committee that the items would be distributed equitably to all 2019 victims in the state.
