The National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC) has handed over the dormant Yauri Water Scheme to the Kebbi state government.

The water scheme had been dormant for 30 years until HYPPADEC began work on it two years ago, leading to the restoration of clean water supply to Yauri and environs.

At the ceremony in Yauri, Thursday, the Managing Director of the agency, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa, said the rehabilitation work was carried out in collaboration with the Kebbi government at the sum of N2 billion.

“Water supply is a critical component of the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who placed high premium on quality of life of the citizenry.

“The rehabilitated Yauri Water Scheme will ensure safe and good drinking water with consistent supply to households, businesses and institutions.

“HYPPADEC spent about N2 billion on comprehensive overhaul of the water scheme for optimal performance and sustainability,” he said, while commending the Kebbi state governor, Nasir Idris, for collaborating with the agency for the success of the project.

Commissioning the project, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, represented by his Chief of Staff, Simeon Ngwu, described the water scheme as significant giant stride of President Tinubu to improve the wellbeing of power producing communities.

“The water works in New Bussa has already been commissioned in August, and today we are doing the same for Yauri. Water supply improves health, sanitation and economic empowerment, reliable access to water is also liberty for families while local businesses which rely on water will have increased productivity,” he stated.
