Equity market opens week negative, sheds N139bn

The nation’s equity market on Wednesday opened week on a negative note, declining by N139 billion as depreciation in the share prices of the small, medium and highly capitalised stocks impacted negatively on the market index. 

The NGX trading result showed that Dangote Cement, Dangote Sugar, FBNHoldings, Nestle Nigeria Plc, Okomu oil, UACN, Caverton among others depreciated in price.

Market capitalisation of listed equities depreciated by 0.34 per cent to N40.367 trillion from N40.506 trillion reported the previous day. 

The NGX All Share Index also went down by 254.63 basis points to 73768.64 points from 74023.27 points reported on Tuesday. 

Investors traded 432.913 million shares valued at N12.937 billion in 8901 deals against 423.301 million shares worth N16.584 billion in 6333 deals. 

An analysis of the investment showed that Eterna Plc led gainers table during the day, appreciating by 10 per cent to close at N13.20 per share, Mansard Insurance followed with a gain of 9.96 per cent to close at N5.19 per unit, Multiverse added 9.95 per cent to close at N15.36 per unit, Infinity Savings gained 9.93 per cent to close at N4.98 per unit while IMG increased by 9.85 per cent to close at N11.15 per unit. 

On the contrary, UACN recorded the highest loss during the day, shedding 10 per cent to close at N13.50 per share, Deap capital trailed with a loss of 7.25 per cent to close at N0.64 per unit, Caverton fell by 6.59 per cent to close at N1.70 per unit, Royal Express dipped by 6.25 per cent to close at N0.60 per unit, Tantelizer declined by 6.12 per cent to close at N0.40 per unit.

Transactions in the shares of Jaiz Bank led market activities with 35.382 million shares valued at N58.742 million, Transnational Corporation of Nigeria Transcorp) followed with account of 31.088 million shares worth N279.125 million, Unity Bank traded 25.116 million shares cost N40.495 million, GTCO Plc traded 20.465 million shares valued at N819.270 million, United Capital exchanged 18.767 million shares worth N466.505 million.
