Equity market closes lower, sheds N106bn

The nation’s equity market on Friday closed week in a negative note, declining by N106 billion following the profit taking activities embarked by investors during the day.

Market capitalisation of listed equities depreciated by 0.33 per cent to N32.126 trillion from N32.232 trillion reported on Thursday.

The NGX All Share Index also depreciated by 194.25 basis to 59,000.96 points from 59,195.21 points traded the previous day.

Meanwhile the market between Monday and Friday recorded price appreciation, increasing by N1.658 trillion, representing a gain of 5.44 per cent to close at N32.126 against N30.468 trillion it opened for the week.

The NGX index also appreciated by 3,044.37 basis points to 59000.96 points from 55,965.59 points it started on Monday

An analysis of the investment during the day showed that Wapic Insurance led gainers table in percentage terms, gaining 10 per cent to close at N0.66 per shares, FTNCocoa followed with a gain of 9.76 per cent to close at N1.35 per share, Transcorps Hotel gained 9.69 per cent to N14.60 per unit, RTBriscoe and Unity Bank added 9.68 per cent each to close at N0.34 and N1.02 per share respectively.

On the contrary, NEM Insurance topped losers chart, dropping by 9.87 per cent to close at N6.30 per unit, Abbey Building Society trailed with a loss of 9.52 per cent to close at N1.52 per share, CWG fell by 9.50 per cent to close at N1.62 per unit, JohnHolt recorded drop of 9.45 per cent to close at N1.15 per share while TIP down by 9.30 per cent to close at N0.39 per share.

Volume of trades declined by 547.584 million shares, representing a drop of 46.80 per cent as investors traded 622.416 million shares valued at N6.510 billion in 9417 deals against 1.170 billion shares valued at N15.359 billion  in 12611 deals.

Transactions in the shares of Living Trust led market activity during the day with 10$.433 million shares valued at N278.231 million in 32 deals, United Bank for Africa followed with account of 46.269 million shares worth N524.256 million 606 deals,  Access Corp traded 41.023 million shares cost N591.849 million in 614 deals,  Zenith Bank exchanged 39.093 million shares valued at N1.211 billion in 632 deals while Sterling Bank sold a total of 37.032 million shares valued at N115.886 million in 227 deals.
