Taiwo Awoniyi, the Super Eagles striker, is in an induced coma following emergency surgery, according to the Daily Mail.
Awoniyi was hurt in the last minutes of Nottingham Forest’s 2-2 Premier League match with Leicester City on Sunday.
Earlier on Tuesday, the club said the Nigerian was “recovering well so far following urgent surgery on a serious abdominal injury”.
However, Daily Mail indicate the damage might have been fatal if not treated with a “complex” medical procedure.
Awoniyi received treatment on the pitch after colliding with a post while attempting to score a goal.
He attempted to be courageous and play on, but was compelled to leave after a few minutes.
The incident left Forest with 10 men as they pursued a crucial goal in their quest to qualify for the Champions League, resulting in a spat between the club’s owner, Evangelos Marinakis, and Nuno.
