Ensure Super Eagles pick 2026 World Cup ticket, FG tells NFF

The Federal Government has urged the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) board to be resilient and determined in ensuring the Super Eagles qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. 

Minister of Sports, Senator John Owan Enoh, set this target at the 2024 Annual General Assembly (AGA) held inside Delta state government House Conference Hall, Asaba on friday.

Enoh said the government and people of Nigeria expect nothing less than the World Cup ticket from the Super Eagles, along with bringing home the Afcon trophy from Morocco. 

He also urged the federation to resolve the lingering crisis over the board’s Secretary General tenure and appoint a deserving technical adviser for the men’s senior national team.

The Minister commended the leadership style of the federation, led by Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau and reaffirmed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s unwavering commitment to supporting the federation’s activities. 

Enoh highlighted football’s significant role in uniting the country and advised the football family to remain united, avoiding sentiment and personal interests that could cause discord.

Enoh hailed the current board’s successes and encouraged them to improve the country’s domestic league standards. He revealed his good working relationship with NFF President Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau MON, with regular consultations whenever necessary.

Former NFF President and FIFA board member Mr. Pinnick Amaju endorsed Alhaji Gusau for re-election in 2026, advising potential contestants to support Gusau’s continued progress. 

Amaju also urged the federation to reappoint Dr. Muhammad Sunusi as General Secretary, citing his wealth of experience.

Delta State Governor, represented by deputy Sir. Monday Oyeme, opened the Assembly, urging Congress to discuss Nigeria football’s future and assuring the federation of his government’s support.

Governor Shariff highlighted hosting and winning the national youth games in 2023 and 2024 as notable achievements.

NFF President Gusau thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support and Congress members for their cooperation. 

He assured the federation’s continued efforts to improve Nigeria football and appreciated Delta state government for hosting the assembly, describing Delta State as the “home of Sports.” 

The event drew state FA Chairmen from 36 states and FCT and affiliated bodies.
